Here is how it works: My system keeps the bowls and BCS System but mixes in a playoff. It keeps one poll to determine seeds. In my dream system, we would have 4 Super 16-team conferences. The Big Ten, Pac Ten, SEC and ACC. I expanded each to 16 teams. That would give us 64 serious big time schools in serious big time conferences.
Then there is one super conference of schools that I consider Mid-Majors in 5 divisions that total 42 schools. Most of these teams are either very competitive in football, but not another sport. Or maybe they are great in basketball, but not football. But, I think they should be D-I teams and they should have the chance (although very limited) to compete for a national championship.
The 5 divisions of the Mid-Major Conference will have their playoff series at the conclusion of the 12 game regular season. All conferences will have a championship game that determines their overall winner. What you will be left with in the end is 5 conference champion teams. Four of the teams will be the champions of their super conferences and one mid-major that has a shot to win it all. I love that underdog scenario because this gives a Boise State, TCU, Houston, BYU, Utah, or Cincinnati a chance.
I would use the polls to seed teams for the playoffs. I would use the BCS Bowls to conduct those playoff games in a rotating fashion. These championship playoff bowl games will happen on Saturdays. The other bowl games will be held featuring non-champion teams and they can be held during the month of December to fill in just about every day of the week. ESPN can still have their "Bowl Champion Week." These games will be what they are anyway, exhibition games that do not count towards the selection of an overall champion anyway.
So here it is:
BCS
So how did I do? Did a miss any teams? Do you think there is a problem anywhere? I'm curious to get some feedback here. But, like I said at the beginning, I NEVER expect College Football to make any sense. Not in my lifetime anyway!
