Thanks to Glenn Beck... he always goes "above and beyond."

"We are surrounded by people who want to control you." - Glenn Beck
How do they let people like this on tv?
Glenn Beck warns everyone, "We are surrounded by people who want to control you." So scary. Isn't that the same kind of fear that led James Von Brunn to do what he did? Just sad.
This is so super sad. I don't understand why people vent on people who "hate" -- while hating themselves. It's a ridiculous self parody. Sad.

Who's to blame?
All well and good. But, I would like to see Obama get a fair shot at trying to fix this thing. Bush had his fair shot at screwing it all to hell. It only took him 8 years to send us into the worst economic downturn since the great depression.

Zero
This is really amazing...
Just makes me shake my head. We are in a financial crisis and they do nothing? I don't get it. What a mess.

Body of War
I finally got to watch the documentary Body of War tonight. It really left me sad and angry. The movie was very well done. Amazingly poignant and precise in their message. I highly recommend it.
One of the real tough things for me was watching all those Senators stand up in Congress and march out talking point after talking point about why we should go to Iraq. Just chilling.
The person that jumped up out of the documentary and was a real star (other than the obvious veteran Thomas Young) was West Virginia Democratic Senator Robert Byrd. It is a touching scene when the elder Senator meets with Thomas in his office at the end of the documentary and they recount the list of 23 "Immortals" (as Byrd describes them) who voted against the war in the Senate.
LA Times Review of Body of War:

LA Times Review of Body of War:
What's striking about the footage of the march up to war -- and who'd have thought you could ever call C-SPAN footage striking -- is the rushed, hollow, echoed tone the rhetoric takes and how quickly and inexorably the resolution to authorize the use of force in Iraq is passed despite the measured, impassioned objections of 23 people, including Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.). Donahue and Spiro methodically contrast the rushed and cursory decision with the lifelong consequences people like Young face, and slightly heavy-handed as it is, it couldn't make for a more damning before and after.Washington Post Review of Body of War:
Where "Body of War" goes right is in its passion and power and the way its various arteries eventually converge in a meeting at Byrd's office between the senator and Young. "The immortal 23" is how the elderly senator describes his colleagues who voted against the war. Byrd reads all the names, and they're listed, too, in the film's end credits, along with their compatriots in the House. Moviegoers should be so advised, in case they want to bring a pen and paper.

Why Do I Pay So Much For Gas?

I had an argument with someone near the end of the school year. The topic was, "What could a President do about the price of a gallon of gas?" I believe a lot. For one, there is the "Enron Loophole." This should be required viewing of anyone who complains about the high price of gas:
So what's the deal? No BIG deal, you say? Liberal media making this up?

A Pitfall Called the Enron Loophole:
The exempt-commercial-markets provision in the Commodity Futures Modernization Act -- also called the "Enron loophole" -- has turned out to be the Achilles' heel of the law. It was inserted at the eleventh hour at the behest of Enron's attorneys. There was never a hearing or any open discussion of this provision. The good thing it did was increase competition; for example, it helped foster the incredible growth of the Intercontinental Exchange. But the provision has resulted in some significant unintended consequences that need to be addressed now.
USAToday: Senators: Close 'Enron loophole, increase regulation'
The original idea was to create competition in the energy sector. That has backfired. Now the only competition is how much $$$ these oil/gas companies are going to make. WashPost: Exon Profits for 2007: $40 Billion

Tim Russert 1950-2008

Tears are streaming down my face as I watch NBC Nightly News and the report about the passing today of Tim Russert. This election will not be the same and will not be right without him.
Really sad.
I am a political junkie, as readers of this blog know. Sunday mornings just will not be the same without Tim. And I don't think I will ever watch an election night coverage on television without thinking about what Tim Russert would say about it.
He was the longest serving host on the longest running television program in history - NBC's Meet the Press. But, he was also the leader of the NBC Political team.
He died at 58. Same age as my father... and with father's day on Sunday this is a tough weekend made tougher for me.

Why Norma Won't Vote for Romney in 2008!
This is something I found on Eclectablog. Amazing really that someone could be so stupid.
What a jerk!
Romney's Cruel Canine Vacation - TIMEThe incident: dog excrement found on the roof and windows of the Romney station wagon. How it got there: Romney strapped a dog carrier — with the family dog Seamus, an Irish Setter, in it — to the roof of the family station wagon for a twelve hour drive from Boston to Ontario, which the family apparently completed, despite Seamus's rather visceral protest.
Massachusetts's animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal "in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon." An officer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a description of the situation saying "it's definitely something I'd want to check out." The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law but did note that it's against state law to have a dog in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and "if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it, that would be illegal." And while it appears that the statute of limitations has probably passed, Stacey Wolf, attorney and legislative director for the ASPCA, said "even if it turns out to not be against the law at the time, in the district, we'd hope that people would use common sense...Any manner of transporting a dog that places the animal in serious danger is something that we'd think is inappropriate...I can't speak to the accuracy of the case, but it raises concerns about the judgment used in this particular situation."
What a jerk!

Worse than terrorists attacking? Gays in the military
NYTimes: Ask Don't Translate - an OpED by an outed Arabic Translator
This is scary to me:
It does crack me up when Jon says, "Bueller... Buelller... Bueller..." I do that in class at the beginning of the year when checking attendance. Kids crack up (Those that remember Ferris Bueller's Day Off anyway.)

My supervisors did not want to lose me. Most of my peers knew I was gay, and that didn’t bother them. I was always accepted as a member of the team. And my experience was not anomalous: polls of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan show an overwhelming majority are comfortable with gays. Many were aware of at least one gay person in their unit and had no problem with it.Yeah, so listen closely to the GOP, we have one great thing to fear - "Terrorism." But, what is scarier? "Gays."
“Don’t ask, don’t tell” does nothing but deprive the military of talent it needs and invade the privacy of gay service members just trying to do their jobs and live their lives. Political and military leaders who support the current law may believe that homosexual soldiers threaten unit cohesion and military readiness, but the real damage is caused by denying enlistment to patriotic Americans and wrenching qualified individuals out of effective military units. This does not serve the military or the nation well.
Consider: more than 58 Arabic linguists have been kicked out since “don’t ask, don’t tell” was instituted. How much valuable intelligence could those men and women be providing today to troops in harm’s way?
This is scary to me:

Kudos to John Edwards! First to a Green Campaign

John Edwards won some points with me today:
Edwards Increases Efforts To Fight Global Warming; Announces Campaign Will Be Carbon Neutral
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – As part of his efforts to combat global warming, Senator John Edwards announced today that he will make his campaign "carbon neutral." Edwards believes global warming is one of the great challenges facing America and the world and that we can all take immediate action to decrease the amount of carbon we produce. By conserving energy and purchasing carbon offsets, the Edwards campaign will offset the carbon emitted by Edwards and his staff's campaign travel, and the energy used in his campaign headquarters and field offices.I have not come even close to making up my mind about who I will be voting for in 2008. No one should at this point, IMHO. I think we should give all of these candidates a chance to prove who can run the best 'issues based' campaign. Which person has the organizational ability and leadership to drive their campaign to victory? Why should CNN and the national media select between Hill and Barack? I will put my support behind the candidate that impresses me the most.
"Global warming is an emergency and we can't wait until the next president is elected to take action," said Edwards. "Each of us can take responsibility in small ways to make a big difference. I encourage all Americans to conserve energy in their own homes and workplaces and help fight global warming."
Score one today for Edwards.

War with Iran?
This is something I am behind 100%. Hillary's words regarding IRAN
But, what makes anyone believe this President is going to listen to the will of Congress? He hasn't listened to the will of the American people in Iraq with the escalation there.

It would be a mistake of historical proportion if the Administration thought that the 2002 resolution authorizing force against Iraq was a blank check for the use of force against Iran without further Congressional authorization. Nor should the President think that the 2001 resolution authorizing force after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, in any way, authorizes force against Iran. If the Administration believes that any, any use of force against is necessary, the President must come to Congress to seek that authority. The President is Commander in Chief, but he does not have unlimited powers of war. To send yet another air craft carrier into the Gulf and threaten Iran troubles me deeply. Diplomacy is the way forward with Iran, not war.
But, what makes anyone believe this President is going to listen to the will of Congress? He hasn't listened to the will of the American people in Iraq with the escalation there.

Why I Hate Bill O'Reilly
It doesn't get any clearer than this video. If you don't have an opinion of O'Reilly, I think you will after watching this. If you already do have an opinion and it's negative, after watching this video it will be more so.
How do people get away with this?
This report aired on Olbermann's show in June, 2006. The only thing that makes me feel better is that this stat appears below the video on Youtube: Views: 108,176.

A great day to be a Dem

I didn't have very high expectations. When you have lived through the tough loses of the past few national elections, you just hold your breath. I couldn't believe all the prognosticators about what was coming. But it is here...
1) A Dem controlled House.
2) A woman speaker for the first time ever.
3) Control of the majority of governor's seats.
4) Rummy Resigns! WOW.
AND TONIGHT!...
5) A Dem controlled Senate.
Yep, that's a sweep folks. They eeked it out, but the Democrats took the Senate, too. Amazing.
Here is my bottom line with all of it: This should help the 2008 Election cycle. Dems now know they can win again. Their confidence is restored. Now it is up to them to show the public that they can govern and that they can be trusted. Talk is cheap. Two years from now we'll have to see serious movement out of Iraq. Two years from now we'll have to see the Congress make progress on increasing the minimum wage and reforming immigration.
If they make progress in these regards, it sets up nicely for Hillary, Edwards, Obama, or Biden.
But, what it is all about is the people speaking and taking a stand. Enough is certainly enough. I haven't been blogging much about politics lately. I just can't seem to take it any more. But, just maybe I will have a few good stories to talk about for a change?
What a great day.
