Swine Flu

Although I agree that we have something to worry about, especially since I live in Houston, Texas. But, Jon Stewart's story on Swine Flu, actually on the smashing of the panic button by the 24 hour news channels was dead on. This week I've watched too much tv while I've been home. I agree with Jon's assessment.

Geraldo's voice is always in panic mode. "It won't stay in St. Francis Prep!"

I loved the line, "Mexican Bullet Flu - it's an airborne virus." (sad but true)

I can see clearly now... the blur is gone

Well, today was interesting. It started out with me going to work... for about 2 hours. I didn't feel well, didn't look well... and well, there was NOTHING to do. I wasn't giving the TAKS test because I was not feeling well enough. So my job was to guard a hallway that no one was going down anyway.

So I took a trip to the school nurse to get her opinion about my eye. My vision was still blurry - like looking through glass. The infection on my eye had spread to the top lid. So the nurse (as Norma had begged me to do the day before) suggested I go back to the eye doctor.

Of course, that was the right thing to do. The doc switched my meds and I have seen a difference already. My vision has cleared up tonight. I still don't feel "well." My head hurts and my eyes want to close. So I'm going to bed early.

Tonight I will sleep soundly because I know that after a week of this, we are finally on the road to recovery. I should be back to work on Friday. It will be nice to be back in the saddle again.

Eye Infection

This week has just been a mess. Here's the rundown...

Tuesday of last week I began feeling a bit of pain and swelling in my lower left eyelid. I figured I was getting a stye (although that never happened).

The next morning I woke up and had swelling around my eye, cheek and neck on the left side. More pain as well.

Then Thursday I couldn't take it much longer and went to a Walgreen's Clinic to get some help. The doc gave me an antibiotic that would fight staff infection.

On Friday at 2:30 am, I woke up with my eye matted shut and my eyeball was almost totally red. It was killing me. So Norma took the day off and took me into the ER. They gave me an IV with painkillers and antibiotics, a Catscan (to be sure that there wasn't any infection in the back of my eye), and oral antibiotics px. Doc said, "Come back if it gets worse."

This picture was from the ER on Friday morning. Weird angle, but you can see how swollen my face was on the left side.

Saturday morning it got worse. The pain was at a new high level and my vision was very cloudy and blurry. I went back into the ER and they checked the eye for any injury to it. This time the doc prescribed antibiotic eye drops and antibiotic eye ointment. He also told me to keep the appointment on Monday with the Eye Specialist and to "Come back to the ER if it gets worse."

On Sunday it got worse, but I didn't go to the ER. The pain was now directly in the eyeball itself and it felt as if someone was stabbing a needle into it. Unbearable really. So I put an icepack on it and tried to sleep it off. I decided that I was NOT going to take the strong painkillers that they prescribed because they would keep me awake. Sleep will help fight this infection. Plus, the painkillers are very addictive. I decided to try to hold on until the specialist eye appointment on Monday.

Today I woke up and felt a little better. My eye was tired and sore, but not nearly as swollen. There is a terrible black line of blistering blood that formed on the lower lid. I went to the eye specialist. He had some interesting things to say, first that it was probably a staff infection (which is pretty cool that the initial doc was probably right on) or it was a spider bite. He did not think it was a stye because one never developed. He told me to keep taking my oral antibiotics and that it was the key to defeating the cellulitis (Cellulitis is a diffuse infection of connective tissue with severe inflammation of dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin). But, he told me to limit the amount of drops and ointment because that was stressing the eye - causing the unbelievable eyeball pain that I had the night before. The doc did say, "Man you got something bad going there. It got you pretty good, didn't it?"

A picture from this afternoon. You can see that line of black across my bottom lid. Gross.

So tonight I am feeling a lot better, but still with blurry vision, soreness, itching, and burning in and around the eye. But, I am way better than last night. Hopefully another day at home and resting will do the trick.

This has been a total nightmare. I have been miserable. I want to thank my BEAUTIFUL wife for putting up with my crying and for doing double duty with Aidan and everything else in our house. I've pretty much been useless. It is very frustrating though dealing with an eye injury like this. It's taken me 20 minutes to type this up. I keep having to take a break from looking at the screen. On top of that anytime there is something up with an eye it is scary. I am going to be very glad to get back to work and be myself again. Luckily this week was the TAKS test - or the state mandated testing at our school. So I didn't really miss all that much.

@ eye doc today for

@ eye doc today for badly infected eye. they have an autographed photo of lance berkman with the doc! i'm in good hands. :)

Texans Top 2 Picks... I like!

Texans select: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC

I love it. He's a tough dude, can rush the passer and is very athletic. A perfect outside linebacker to put behind Mario Williams and next to pro bowl Middle Backer Demeco Ryans. We had the 3rd ranked offense in the NFL last season. But the D was 22nd. The Texans were 8-8 for a second straight year. This makes our team much better. I'm very excited about Cushing. Playoffs? We better be in the playoffs next year.

Cushing was also one of the focal stories of the NFL Network's pre-Draft coverage. It was obvious from watching it that this kid loves football. To me that's a key. NFL players all have talent, but do they have a desire and love of the game.
From the Houston Chronicle: Cushing presents above average skills in the tools department and, combined with elite defensive instincts, Cushing is a solid option for a team looking to build its defensive unit. He does a good job of playing downhill and is a force to reckon with in the passing game. Cushing makes great instinctual decisions around the football. His most notable downside has been his battles with injuries in his career. Cushing missed significant periods of time during two seasons of his college career. When on the field, Cushing displays great tackling skills along with above average run stopping abilities. If he can overcome the questions of durability, he could make a solid Linebacker at the next level.

In the second round (which the Texans have had huge success with in the past few years - see Demeco Ryans) Houston took Conner Barwin from Cincinnati As a former linebacker, I am smiling ear to ear. :) Barwin is very versatile. He started his career at tight end, moved to defense his senior year and had 11 sacks. He also has blocked 4 punts. He plays with a motor and is very quick. I love how low he plays. This is another great pick. The new defensive co-ordinator must be super excited today!
From the Houston Chronicle Site: A stout linebacker with impressive athletic prowess and naturally gifted physical tools, Barwin is a relatively inexperienced player with a lot of room for development and maturation at the next level. He was once a tight end and also played basketball at Cincinnati, experiences that give one insight into the nature of this kid's athleticism. He maintains good balance and agility on his lower half while establishing good push from his upper half, traits that enhance his talents off the edge. Barwin showed the most comfort down in his stance as a down lineman in the 3-4 scheme, but with experience, his natural quickness and dexterity could be utilized at the outside linebacker spot. The main knock on Barwin is that he's still very raw and didn't get many repetitions at Cincinnati, so his coverage skills and consistency, among other things, are somewhat undiscovered. His physical abilities alone make him a project worth investing in.

It has been storming here like crazy for the past two days.

That's the view looking down our street. Lake "King's Mountain Drive!" It took us over an hour to get home this morning from Chuck E. Cheese and Office Depot. A total mess out there. I don't know if I'll leave the house again today. I have had enough.

Easter Egg Hunting

Aidan had a good time last Saturday hunting for Easter Eggs in our village park. He was very excited. But, he only got 7. He went right on past "ordinary" looking eggs and wanted the "exotic" looking ones instead. A bunch had insect and bee looking features and he was pretty intrigued by those.

Still we had a great time.

This was the second of three easter egg hunts for the boy over the long weekend.
1) thursday at preschool
2) saturday in the park
3) sunday at home with Mom - she hid eggs all over the house

In fact, Norma even hid his basket from him too. He had to find eggs with written messages inside to go to the next egg with a hidden message... to the next... to the next... until he got his basket. It was fun.

We had a very nice time together.

Video Project 09

I am really proud of the great work that my students did on their Video Projects. I have created a blog to showcase them:

Video Project 09

Let me know what you think.

On the blog I have posted video and text describing projects ranging from such topics as Vietnam to Genocide in Darfur. There are three primary areas that students could concentrate on for their project:

1) The Modern World - Issues or events past World War II and the Holocaust.
2) Africa - Issues and events concerning the citizens and development of the continent.
3) The Environment - Issues and events from Global Warming/Climate Change to Pollution.

Students have worked very hard on these videos. Not all of them are 100% perfect. There are some typos, awkward moments and a few factual inaccuracies. But, there is no questioning the merit of their efforts and their mission. Each student chose to work on a project that was important to them. It is evident in their passion for educating others and improving our world.
