Christmas Tree Topping 2009

We really had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Now back to work tomorrow.  I'm going to show this to get things revved up at the beginning of the period... we all need some inspiration:



Hopefully it'll help the kids focus and think (and smile) - we only need have a few weeks left of the semester.  It's the stretch run.

Go Fly a Kite!

Today we got up and had breakfast and then drove down to Galveston Island for the day.  We first stopped at Rain Forest Cafe for lunch.  Aidan loved it.  (Except for the really loud part where it starts to storm with thunder and flashing lights and the animals are all screaming - he held his ears for that).

The food was outstanding.  Aidan ate all of his kid's sized pizza.  That is saying something.  He is very picky these days.  Norma had a bar-g-que wrap and I can attest that it was great.  (I had the last bite)  I ate the Pastayala - which was excellent.  It was a cajun pasta with slices of sausage, chicken, shrimp, peppers and onions.  Very good.

After eating we drove down to Kite's Unlimited.  The lady who owned the store was awesome.  She was so friendly and helpful.  She even let Aidan take the money and use the cash machine.  We got a really cool starter kite.  It had a pirate dog with an eye patch on it.  Aidan called him Mutley. 

 

 

 

 

Aidan had a ball flying the kite.  It was a lot of fun.  We walked up and down "Sunny Beach" and had a nice time.  Definitely went how we planned.  He didn't let go of the kite and we even got to bring it home.  So no drama there.

After flying the kite, we drove over to Moody Gardens and took in a quick movie.  It was a 4-D movie with 3-D glasses + all the extra effects, like droplets of water being splashed on you, wind blowing, lights flashing, etc.  We saw an adaptation of Polar Express:

The special effects during this 12-minute show are plenty, including snow in the theater, rumbling seats, cool breezes and the wonderful smell of hot chocolate!

We  had a really great day.  Definitely the highlight was the kite flying.  It's been a wonderful Thanksgiving week and tomorrow we will cap it off by getting the tree up and decorating.  Of course, it'll be even more fun if the Texans beat the Colts!

How to Carve the Thanksgiving Turkey

Best way to thaw a frozen turkey on Thanksgiving Eve?  Stick it in a 5-gallon bucket in the bathroom tub.  Run very cold water into the bucket and then stick a brick or a pot full of water on top to cover the entire bird.  Keep the bird in the wrapper.  You'll need to change the water ever 2 or 3 hours.  By the next morning it will be completely thawed.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Day.  We wish we could see family.  But, we are so far away.

Yesterday we had a great time.  We took a trip to downtown Houston and went to Discovery Green.  We had a picnic lunch with Subway sandwiches and then Aidan played in the park.  Afterwards we drove over to the Galleria area and to the mall.  It was nice to see the Christmas tree (3 stories tall, rising from the ice skating rink in the floor), but Galleria traffic, crowds, and craziness drove us away after an hour or so.  Aidan did get a chance to see Santa with NO LINE.  Which was awesome.  Early, but awesome.  Check - Santa visit and picture = Done.
